Landslide Victory

Rioting continues in Nigeria as President Goodluck Johnathan has won the presidency by a landslide over his major competition Muhammadu Buhari, 59% to 32%. The Nigerian authorities have reported 200 some deaths since the election results, but I am certain the toll is much higher.

Jonathan: Blue (People's Democratic Party)
Buhari: Red (Congress for a Progressive Change)
Nuhu Ribadu: Blue (Action of Congress Nigeria)

Buhari (who received over 12 million votes) is a prominent figure in Nigeria and as a Muslim is supported more by the poorer north and Jonathan as a Christian is supported more by the richer Christian south.

Rioting broke out in mass Monday as polls showed President Jonathan ahead and only invigorated by the official results this Tuesday the 19th. As a county almost split exactly down the middle with a 50% Muslim and 48% Christian make up. Tensions remain high as Jonathan remains in office, while the elections seemed rigged to many of the president's opposition. Something that would not be new to Nigeria and likely easier to attain with new electronic voting machines put in by the current government.

No regime change in Nigeria, but we will likely see the unrest continue to boil over considering the economic situation, religious and political upheaval in this, the 34th largest nation in terms of GDP (PPP) according to the World Bank.
